At Hybritech, he managed a successful program to carry out research and development in the area of monoclonal antibody and cancer therapy. At The Immune Response Corporation, he established programs in Autoimmunity and HIV and led the product development in successful clinical trials. Dr. Carlo received a B.S. degree in Microbiology from Ohio State University and has a Ph.D. in Immunology and Medical Microbiology from Ohio State University. Dr. Sheldon Saul Hendler MD, Ph.D.
The principal author and editor of the PDR for Nutritional Supplements, considered “the standard reference in the field” (New York Times). He is Clinical Professor (Voluntary) of Medicine at University of California, San Diego, Attending Physician (Internal Medicine) at Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego, Professor (Honorary) Biochemistry at Universidad Autonoma de Baja California, and Chairman of Vyrex Corporation, a biotechnology company. In addition to the PDR for Nutritional Supplements, he has written a number of books and articles on nutritional and dietary supplements, including the award-winning The Doctors’ Vitamin and Mineral Encyclopedia (Simon & Schuster, Publisher) and The Complete Guide to Anti-Aging Nutrients (Simon & Schuster, Publisher), the book that introduced the term “anti-aging.” Dr. Hendler has published papers in leading medical and scientific journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, Nature, and The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Medicinal Food (Mary Ann Liebert Publishers), an international, peer-reviewed, indexed journal.
Dr. Hendler serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Dietary Supplement Education Alliance (DSEA) and is scientific and medical advisor to some of the major food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic companies. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Salk Institute where his research contributed to the discovery of the fine structure of the chromosome as well as to the development of the first antiviral and retroviral drugs. He serves on the Scientific Advisory Council of Archer Daniels Midland and was a member of the AARP Pharmacy Nutrition Advisory Board. He is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition and of the American Institute of Chemists and the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. Dr. Hendler was a co-founder of the prestigious Universidad Autonama de Baja California as well as Founding Chairman and Professor of the Biochemistry Department. He was a member of the AARP Pharmacy Nutrition Advisory Board, and was a member of the Scientific and Nutrition Subcommittee of the United States Olympic Committee.
His patents include method for inhibiting viral and retroviral infections, antiviral agents, metallic oligopeptide complexes, isoflavone derivatives, tocopherol-based antiviral agents and method of using same, complexing urushiols, airborne protectants against oxidative tissue damage, methods for inhibition of angiogenesis with a composition comprising 3-hydroxythalidomide, methods for delipidation of skin and cerumen removal, and water-soluble prodrugs of propofol for treatment of migraine. His use of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to study the motions of large molecules, specifically nucleic acids, gave future rise to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Dr. Hendler’s achievements are many. They include the discovery of fluorescence associated with the building blocks of nucleic acids and the recognition that this could be used as an assay for locating and purifying messenger RNAs; discovery of the 1st nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor while working in the lab of future Nobel Laureate J. Michael Bishop; identification of the fine structure of the chromosome; co-discovery of a novel skin disorder, Elastoderma, considered to be a model for aging of the skin, and; discovery of chromium picolinate, a mineral that was arguably the most exciting dietary supplement of the 1990s. Dr. Hendler received his BS and PhD in Biochemistry from Columbia University, and his MD from the University of California, San Diego.
